VOICES AGAINST PRIVATE EDUCATION STANDS IN SUPPORT OF UTLA PROTEST/RALLY AND NEWS CONFERENCE

Los Angeles, CA –  Voices Against Privatizing Education, a grassroots coalition working to repeal the Charter School Act of 1992, strongly encourages all who support public education to attend the protest/rally on Sunday, September 20th at 2ND & GRAND in Los Angeles at 9:30 A.M., outside the new Broad Museum on opening day. Join educators, parents, students, and community members to tell the billionaires “Hands Off Our Schools!”

Event organizers state: “Broad is planning to dismantle public education by taking 50% of students out of LAUSD and putting them in unregulated, non-union charters that don’t play by the same rules as other schools. Losing 50% of our enrollment would trigger a severe loss in funding for crucial resources and programs for our students.”

Voices Against Privatizing Education is a coalition of activists, educators, parents and community members working toward equity in California public schools by placing an initiative on the 2016 California ballot to Repeal the California Charter School Act of 1992.  Reports show charter schools cherry pick students, segregate students based on race and income, falsify records, commit enrollment fraud, close down community schools, reject students with special needs and students who are English Language learners. They destroy jobs and bust up unions. We now see essentially a three tiered system; this discriminatory behavior must never be tolerated! Enough is enough!

The effort to Repeal the CA Charter School Act of 1992 has been endorsed by AFT Local 6161 (Palomar Faculty Federation), North County Labor Alliance, Escondido Public School Advocates, Wellstone Progressive Democrats of Sacramento Chicano Latino Caucus, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement-Sacramento Chapter.

We say no more billionaire and corporate takeover of our public schools!

Charter schools cherry pick students, falsify records, commit enrollment fraud, close down public schools in predominantly low income areas, destroy jobs, bust up unions, appoint private school boards unaccountable to the taxpayers, and segregate student populations based on income and race.

Separate but equal has no place!!

A recent report entitled “Fraud, Waste and Lies: Charter Schools Cheating Communities out of Millions of Dollars” cited hundreds of millions of public education dollars being wasted due to fraud and other abuses in the charter school sector.
